How to stop living someone else’s life script: Reclaiming personal sovereignty

There comes a point where the noise simply gets too loud.

You find yourself doing everything you were taught to do. You chase the next milestone, manage the endless stream of notifications, and react to every external demand. Yet, underneath the motion, a quiet and persistent exhaustion remains.

We live in a culture that thrives on keeping us rushed, reactive, and distracted. What if that feeling of being overwhelmed is not a sign that you are failing to keep up? What if it is an invitation to step out of the loop entirely?

Being in the morning stillness at Piha, watching the mist clear over the water, one realisation becomes unavoidable: most people spend their whole lives trying to fix a script that was handed to them by someone else.

Overcoming social conditioning: Laying down the tapestry

From the moment we step into this world, society, family, and cultural norms begin weaving an identity for us. They define what success looks like, what we ought to fear, how fast we must run, and who we need to become to stay safe or validated.

Over time, we mistake that handed-down pattern for our actual self. We carry it like heavy armour, constantly altering our shape to fit inside a box that was never designed for us.

True sovereignty does not begin by trying to patch up that old, exhausting pattern. It begins when you simply lay it down.

During a morning reflection, that exact principle took form in a verse titled "The Tapestry":

Lay down the tapestry given. Woven as one.

Recourse the wisdom as a whole.

Triumphant as a precursor to the great...

Release the worry for life.

Tumble into its flow.

Gliding and blending as one.

Become in tune with the all...

Transformed in the sacrosanct place of now.

Read those words again: "Lay down the tapestry given."

You do not have to keep carrying the fears, expectations, or urgent timelines of a world that does not know your core frequency. You are allowed to set the script down.

From overthinking to stillness: The weighted blanket of knowing

When we live entirely in our heads, constantly overthinking, worrying about tomorrow, or replaying yesterday, life feels fluttery, light, and anxious. It feels like driving at high speed with the park brake engaged.

When you finally drop out of that mental chatter and anchor into the present moment, something physical shifts.

It feels like a weighted blanket of knowing.

It is an immovable, solid presence in your chest. It is the feeling of both feet planted firmly on the earth, taking in the sheer scale of existence, and realising that you do not need to control any of this. You simply need to inhabit your place in it.

When you settle into that internal sanctuary, the rush stops. You stop asking for permission to exist. You step out of the passenger seat of your life, take the wheel, and begin operating on your own time.

3 practices to reclaim your sovereignty today

If your life feels overwhelming right now, you do not need another system or a faster pace. You need scale, perspective, and stillness. Here is how you can begin laying down the tapestry today:

  • Discern the voices: When a wave of pressure hits you, stop and ask whether it is your true voice or the noise of social conditioning. Learn to separate collective anxiety from your own quiet inner authority.

  • Remove the hesitation: Stop waiting for a perfect moment or external validation to live on your terms. Take off the blinkers and step into the arena unhurried, unburdened, and fully awake.

  • Tumble into the flow: Let go of the need to micro-manage every outcome. Trust that when you align your internal state first, your external reality naturally falls into place behind it.

You were never meant to squeeze into a small, frantic world.

Step out of the noise. Settle into your true scale. The higher order of who you are is waiting on the other side of the rush.
