How to set energetic boundaries & reclaim your identity by creating your own Sovereign Circle

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself who you actually are when you strip away your job, your titles, and the needs of the people around you?

So many of us spend our lives existing inside someone else’s circle. We attach our entire identity to our corporate roles, or we merge completely with our relationships, becoming so wrapped up in a partner, a child, or a family member that we lose track of where they end and where we begin. Like a Venn diagram that has collapsed into a single shape, we lose our distinct edges.

Then, life shifts. A career ends, a relationship changes, or a loved one passes away, and we are left asking the terrifying question: Who am I without this?

The illusion of losing yourself

When a major shift occurs, it feels like a piece of your soul has been ripped away. But the loss is not that you lost yourself; it is that you built your entire identity inside an environment or person that was always external to you. You allowed your energy, your happiness, and your purpose to live outside your own perimeter.

We hear endless spiritual phrases urging us to "stand in your power", "be grounded", or "know yourself". Yet, despite all the books and podcasts, our immediate instinct when things get hard is still to seek outside of ourselves for answers.

True sovereignty comes from reversing that flow. It is about understanding that life, with all its unexpected trials, is simply weather. When a storm comes, you do not try to control the wind; you dress for the weather and stand firm in your own shelter.

To stand firm, you first have to define the edges of where you begin and end. You need to draw your Sovereign Circle.

Practice: The Physical Somatic Circle

This is a physical, somatic exercise designed to clear external projections out of your personal field and re-establish your boundary.

  1. Find your ground: Stand comfortably with your feet planted firmly on the earth, hips wide, and knees soft so you feel grounded.

  2. Extend your arms: Reach both arms straight out to your sides as far as they will go.

  3. Trace the boundary: Imagine a vivid marker at the very tips of your fingers.

  4. Claim your 360º space: Slowly rotate your entire body in a full 360-degree circle, visualising that marker drawing a thick, impenetrable boundary completely surrounding you.

  5. Acknowledge the line: Look at the space inside that circle. Everything inside this boundary is you: your breath, your truth, your energy, and your peace. Everything outside this circle is simply weather.

Integration: Living Within Your Edges

Creating your Sovereign Circle is not a one-time exercise; it is an everyday practice of energetic boundary setting. Here is how to integrate this practice into your daily life:

1. Let External Things Stay External

When someone enters your space with chaotic energy, or when work demands feel overwhelming, picture your circle. Remind yourself: That is their weather. It belongs outside my line. You can offer love, help, and warmth across your boundary without letting their chaos flood your sanctuary.

2. Notice Where You Leech Your Energy

Pay attention to when you start slipping out of your own circle to fix someone else's mood or fulfil an external expectation. The moment you feel scattered, take a breath, extend your awareness to your arms' length, and pull your energy back into your centre.

3. Dress for the Weather

When difficult life events arrive, stop asking why the weather is happening. Instead, ask: How do I stay grounded within my circle while this passes?
